Faecal Sludge Management Conferences (FSM)

Faecal sludge management (FSM) is an essential part of safely managed sanitation services. However, many toilets lack of proper FSM: emptying is carried out by informal operators or by households under unsanitary conditions and often results in uncontrolled dumping that contaminates the environment.

To meet this challenge, the FSM (Faecal Sludge Management) exchange platform was created in 2011 by various stakeholders. The first two conferences were held in Durban, bringing together some 300 professionals from the sector. In 2017, the WSF4 conference was held in Chennai (Tamil Nadu, India), with more than 1000 participants. In 2019, the FSM5 conference will be held jointly with AfricaSan conference in South Africa.

Invitation - Session on "Sanitation in small towns"

Tuesday 19th February 2019, 4-6pm at the Southern Sun the Cullinan in Cape Town

In parallele of the AfricaSan/FSM5 conference, GIZ and pS-Eau will organise a side session on sanitation in small towns, in collaboration with SuSanA WG6 - Cities and Planning.

GIZ Uganda and pS-Eau will share reflections from their current projects in Uganda and Senegal and from recent research programmes :

  • In Northern Uganda, GIZ has initiated the development of town sanitation plans (TSPs) in six small towns, with the aim to coordinate, integrate and improve various sanitation-related measures at the local level including sanitation marketing and behaviour change communication, involvement of the local private sector, stakeholder participation and law enforcement.
  • In Senegal, pS-Eau is leading a research-action programme, which has carried out a mapping and diagnosis of the situation of sanitation in small towns, capitalized on experiences from 5 localities and is now currently developing monitoring tools.
  • In partnership with Cranfield University, pS-Eau identified and mapped sanitation initiatives in small towns from the literature, and analysed key issues regarding their viability.
