Ce guide terminologique a pour but d'attirer notre attention sur la façon dont nous parlons des personnes ou des groupes qui risquent d'être marginalisés ou de subir une discrimination. Il ne dicte pas les termes à utiliser ou à ne pas utiliser. Il fournit plutôt des principes directeurs, rassemblés à partir d'une série de sources, destinés à aider à sensibiliser au langage que nous utilisons et aux questions relatives au handicap, au genre, à l'identité de genre, à l'orientation sexuelle, à l'âge, à l'origine ethnique, à l'état de santé, aux groupes de travailleurs et aux quartiers informels. These guidelines were put together to help bring our attention to the way we talk about those people or groups that might be at risk of being marginalised or facing discrimination.
These guidelines do not dictate which terms should or should not be used. Rather they provide some guiding principles, gathered from a range of sources, intended to help raise awareness among WaterAid staff and the partners we work with about the language we use and issues surrounding disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, race, HIV and health status.
