| About the course: Safe drinking water is one of the most important issues of crisis relief or development work, and there are growing career opportunities for experienced water and sanitation experts in relief and development situations. While several theoretical courses are available, practical field experience is difficult to obtain - without which it is often impossible to find employment in this field. The introduction course offered by BushProof is tailored for those interested in starting a career in water and sanitation. At the same time, it will be exceptionally useful for those already working for NGOs and who find they become more and more involved in water programmes, but lack the basic technical and theoretical background. This course will provide a very broad overview of technical and theoretical aspects of water and sanitation projects in development situations as well as emergencies. While certain technical options are feasible in both environments, important differences exist, especially concerning methodology, beneficiary participation, scale and planning. Besides theoretical sessions, a number of hands-on practical sessions are included in the course (e.g. construction of hand-dug well, jetting), and participants are encouraged to get stuck in and get their hands dirty! Throughout the course, theoretical issues are linked to real life field experiences. Since the course is given by experienced field practitioners, practical examples from past projects will be used to illustrate important points. The course will be in English. However, francophone participants can be accommodated if they have a reasonable grasp of spoken English. |
