Objectives:
For improvements in urban and rural settings in developing countries, the past few years have shown increasing focus on developing feasible solutions at household level. For water treatment this implies treating drinking water as close as possible to the point of consumption (point-of-use systems). For environmental sanitation, solutions are envisaged which can treat and recycle human wastes as close as possible to their source of generation and/or point of utilisation. Topics covered are: strategic environmental sanitation planning based on a household-centred approach, point-of-use water treatment and decentralized excreta, wastewater, and solid waste management schemes.
