World Bank - Washington Downloadable from the publisher ![]() Abstract: In order to increase demand for ecological waste management systems in El Alto, Bolivia, basic education on ecological sanitation was provided to the local community and authorities. Through the use of a special toilet basin, the solid and liquid waste is separated to be treated in the most effective way. After treatment by California redworms, a fertilizer is produced and used to grow produce in the community. Through four pillars of service, this program puts waste management in the hands of the community in a much more sustainable process.
