Résumé:
Ce guide pratique démontre qu’il est essentiel d’inclure d’une part des éléments WASH dans les programmes nutritionnels et d’autre part des aspects nutritionnels dans les interventions WASH (en les rendant plus sensibles à la nutrition). Il contient des informations et des outils exploitables par les professionnels du domaine pour la conception et la mise en oeuvre de programmes WASH et Nutrition efficaces. En plus d’encourager à concevoir de nouveaux projets intégrés, le guide propose des ajustements pour renforcer les interventions intégrées existantes. Il ne décrit pas d’approche générique ou recommandations strictes mais s’appuie sur des exemples et des outils pratiques permettant d’améliorer les conditions sanitaires à des fins nutritionnelles et médicales. L’intégration des interventions WASH et Nutrition doit toujours tenir compte des conditions spécifiques, opportunités et contraintes propres à chaque contexte.
Ce guide pratique s’adresse principalement aux praticiens de terrain et aux directeurs de programmes WASH et Nutrition en contexte humanitaire ou de développement, en répondant à des questions plus pratiques à propos de l’intégration WASH et Nutrition au niveau du terrain. Il peut aussi servir d’outil aux bailleurs et institutions (comme les ministères de la santé) pour prioriser leurs activités intégrées WASH’Nutrition et leurs financements stratégiques. Abstract:
This operational guidebook demonstrates the importance of both supplementing nutrition programmes with WASH activities and adapting WASH interventions to include nutritional considerations i.e. making them more nutrition-sensitive and impactful on nutrition. It has been developed to provide practitioners with usable information and tools so that they can design and implement effective WASH and nutrition programmes. Apart from encouraging the design of new integrated projects, the guidebook provides support for reinforcing existing integrated interventions. It does not provide a standard approach or strict recommendations, but rather ideas, examples and practical tools on how to achieve nutrition and health gains with improved WASH. Integrating WASH and nutrition interventions will always have to be adapted to specific conditions, opportunities and constrains in each context.
The guidebook primarily addresses field practitioners, WASH and Nutrition programme managers working in humanitarian and development contexts, and responds to the need for more practical guidance on WASH and nutrition integration at the field level. It can also be used as a practical tool for donors and institutions (such as ministries of health) to prioritise strategic activities and funding options. Resumen:
إن نقص التغذية مشكلة متعددة القطاعات، ولها حلول متعددة القطاعات كذلك. يمكن تحسين أثر العمل،

يوضح هذا الدليل التشغيلي أهمية دمج البرامج الغذائية مع تدخ ات المياه، والصرف الصحي، والنظافة العامة،
كما يبرز أهمية تكييف تدخ ات المياه، والصرف الصحي، والنظافة العامة لتشمل الاعتبارات الغذائية؛ بمعنى
أن تصبح أكثر حساسية وارتباط بالتغذية، وذات أثر أكبر فيها. لقد تم تطوير هذا الدليل ليقدم للممارسين
المعلومات والأدوات المفيدة التي يمكنهم استخدامها لتصميم برامج فعَّالة للتغذية، والمياه، والصرف

بل أفكاراً، وأمثلة، وأدوات عملية بشأن كيفية تحقيق مكاسب غذائية وصحية إضافةً إلى تحسين برنامج المياه،
والصرف الصحي، والنظافة العامة. يجب أن يخضع دمج أنشطة التغذية، والمياه، والصرف الصحي، والنظافة
العامة للتعديل بشكل دائم لكي يت اءم مع الظروف الخاصة، والفرص، والقيود القائمة حسب كل سياقِ عملٍ.

 Le chapître 1 présente les notions de base de la sous-nutrition et donne un aperçu général des concepts clés relatifs à la programmation d’interventions intégrées WASH’Nutrition.
 Le chapître 2 explique les liens entre l’environnement sanitaire et le statut nutritionnel et décrit comment les interventions WASH, en luttant contre les maladies et leur propagation, contribuent à réduire la prévalence de la sous-nutrition. Ce chapitre contient aussi un résumé des connaissances actuelles basées sur des preuves scientifiques.
 Le chapître 3 est organisé autour des cinq piliers de la stratégie WASH’Nutrition. Il contient des conseils opérationnels et des indications pour l’intégration d’éléments WASH et Nutrition dans les interventions, en signalant les obstacles potentiels et les stratégies pour y remédier.
 Le chapître 4 décrit la mise en oeuvre pratique des activités intégrées à différents niveaux (ménage, communauté, pays) et dans différentes structures (centres de santé et de nutrition, écoles). Une attention particulière est portée aux interventions intégrées WASH et Nutrition en situation d’urgence.
 Le chapître 5 propose un cadre pour réaliser le suivi et l’évaluation des interventions intégrées, ainsi qu’un ensemble d’indicateurs permettant d’en mesurer la progression et l’impact.
 Le chapître 6 porte sur la mise à l’échelle de l’approche intégrée WASH’Nutrition par le plaidoyer, la communication, le renforcement des capacités du personnel du projet et la recherche opérationnelle.
 La partie Ressources opérationnelles est un ensemble d’outils pratiques et d’exemples de terrain qui facilitent l’intégration WASH’Nutrition. Ces ressources sont classées selon les phases classiques du cycle de projet. Contents:
 Chapter 1 outlines the basics of undernutrition and provides a brief overview of the key concepts relevant for WASH and Nutrition integrated programming.
 Chapter 2 provides the rationale behind linking nutritional status with WASH environment and explains how WASH interventions, by preventing infection and disease, help reduce undernutrition. A short summary of existing evidencebased knowledge is presented in this Chapter.
 Chapter 3 is organized around the five pillars of WASH’Nutrition strategy. It gives operational guidance and advice on how to integrate WASH and nutrition interventions, highlighting possible challenges and proposing strategies for overcoming them.
 Chapter 4 describes a practical implementation of integrated activities at different levels (household, community, national) and in different settings (health and nutrition centres, schools). Special attention is given to integrating WASH and Nutrition in emergency contexts.
 Chapter 5 proposes a framework for monitoring and evaluating integrated interventions, together with a set of indicators that can be used to measure progress and impact.
 Chapter 6 covers advocacy for WASH and nutrition integration, communication, capacity-building for project staff and the operational research.
 THE Programmatic resources SECTION contains a collection of practical tools and examples from field projects to help integration efforts at each phase of a classical project cycle.
