Abstract:
The first atlas of its kind, this new publication offers a comprehensive, regional understanding of the changing climate and its impact on water resources in five of the major river basins in the region: the Indus, Brahmaputra, Ganges, Salween and Mekong.
The atlas includes recommendations (p. 86) to encourage policy makers to develop flexible and cooperative strategies between countries in order to deal with increased variability and to meet the challenges posed by either too much or too little water. Among others, the recommendations include:
- the implementation of flexible and diverse solutions to address the high level of uncertainty, such as the restructuring of farming systems towards higher flexibility to withstand increased flood risk;
- the implementation of structural (flood prevention measures) and non-structural (building codes, land use planning) measures to adequately prepare for and manage extreme events;
- strengthening modeling approaches to further reduce uncertainty and undertake research to fill critical gaps.
