Abstract:
The treated wastewater produced as effluents form sewage systems of urban communities represents a non-conventional renewable water, which could be an attractive and cheap source to be used for agriculture, nearby the urban centers. However, due to the different nature of this water (its load of mineral, organic and biological constituents) ; its reuse should be carefully administered and professionally monitored and managed to check its potential risks and threats to the soil, water, crops irrigated with it, as well as the whole environment .

The present manual which is produced in the Arabic and English languages, by the FAO Regional Office, in coordination with the WHO Regional Office, is a step towards promoting the use of treated wastewater for agriculture (mainly) irrigation, with adequate technical information given for the safe and efficient use of this ‘’ special water ‘’, with the minimum risk and the maximum environmental protection.
