DEWATS Decentralised wastewater treatment in developing countries 1998 Abstract:
The guidebook addresses to Urban Service Providers or National and local governments as well as to academic institutions, international NGOs or local community-based organizations.
The demand for reliable, efficient and low-cost wastewater treatment systems is increasing world wide especially in densely populated urban regions where adequate wastewater treatment systems do not exist and uncontrolled discharge of wastewater endangers environmental health and water resources. DEWATS is designed to be an element of a comprehensive strategy for city-wide planning and sustainable infrastructure development. It is dimensioned in such a way that treated water meets requirements stipulated in environmental laws and regulations.
The guidebook not only explains technical requirements for efficient treatment of wastewater in locations with a special geographic focus in developing countries. It also includes socio-economic conditions and steps for community action planning.
