UNESCO - Paris Téléchargeable sous format: PdF ![]() Abstract: 4 From 28 to 31 of January, 2025, UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme (UNESCO WWAP) and the University of Pisa organized the International Workshop on Water and Gender, at the premises of the Convention Centre Le Benedettine, Pisa, Italy. The event brought together 52 researchers, policymakers, and practitioners from 18 countries around the world to advance discussions on the persistent gender inequalities in the water sphere. The Workshop also provided a useful platform to examine the persistent structural barriers that hinder progress in the water domain. It was also an opportunity to exchange valuable expert knowledge, and to identify actionable solutions that promote inclusivity, equality, and women’s leadership in the various water sectors. The International Workshop was structured around five key thematic sessions that reflect the core priorities of the global Multi-stakeholder Call for Action Initiative on Gender Equality in Water. These include gender-equal funding, inclusive policy frameworks, women’s leadership and participation, inclusive access to water resources, and bridging the gender data gap. Interactive discussions also explored emerging issues such as eco-feminism, menstrual poverty, climate resilience, and the intersection of gender, caste, and class in water access, highlighting the need for an intersectional approach in addressing gender disparities. These Workshop’s Proceedings compile the key note speeches, abstracts and video-posters from the participating expert presentations and indicate the breadth of discussions they gave rise to. They illustrate the breadth of the discussions and the diverse contributions through current research, case studies, insights, and innovative practices aimed at dismantling gender disparities in the water domain. Thereby, they form a tangible contribution to the 2023 Water Action Agenda, directly aligned with the the commitments of the of Multi-stakeholder Coalition pledged during the UN 2023 Water Conference of New York. This volume serves as a valuable resource for academicians, policymakers, practitioners, and other stakeholders engaged in advancing gender equality in the water sector. By documenting the insights and expertise shared during the workshop, and underscoring the need for further concrete actions, it aims to inspire continued dialogue and -above all- action towards a more inclusive and sustainable water domain.
