Abstract:
Waalo Waalo is a film taking place in Keur Momar Sarr, in the region of Louga, in the Sahel of Senegal. In this film we follow daily activities around the village, focusing on access to water. In the houses of Keur Momar Sarr, in the neighboring village of Robo or in the farther Ndialbenabe Macka, potable water is a ever present concern and a heavy weight in people's actions.
The contradiction is there, the proximity of villages with and without water resources, exploited locally by a national private company. Politics can be felt in the air. But despite hardships people show their dignity rejecting being victims, associating themselves among them.
The name Waalo Waalo simbolizes the people that inhabit this area, which before colonial times was the kingdom of Waalo, a name that has endured despite the desintegration of the social structures. Waalo Waalo is not supposed to be a film about Africa or about Senegal. it is not supposed to be an african film, a particularistic or a general film. It is a result of the many people that have crossed its way in a contributing fashion.
