Presentation
Faced with the challenge of providing a safe water supply and sanitation to all, decentralised financing mechanisms that are based on a sense of solidarity between users help to improve access for the poorest, thus contributing to reaching the Millennium Development Goals. These mechanisms complement Official Developement Assistance, targeting those populations that are often overlooked by conventional funding channels, and can even exercise a leverage effect, attracting more funding thanks to the trust that is built. Furthermore, due to their very nature, solidarity financing mechanisms contribute to building local capacities to manage water and sanitation services, thus enhancing the sustainability of access.
Quote
" I don't believe in charity. I believe in solidarity. Charity is vertical, so it's humiliating. It goes from the top to the bottom. Solidarity is horizontal. It respects the other and learns from the other. I have a lot to learn from other people "
Eduardo Galeano, Uruguayan journalist and author
