An initial study identified different types of solidarity financing mechanisms around the world and is presented at the 3rd World Water Forum in Kyoto in 2003 (Rapport de la session). |
| Paris 2005 |
In March 2005 at the UNESCO in Paris, various representatives of water stakeholders from North and South (NGOs, associations, companies, local authorities etc.) met to discuss solidarity in water and sanitation (Rapport de la réunion).
During this meeting, the need to demonstrate the impact and significance of solidarity funds and to strengthen the role of local authorities through decentralised and non-governmental co-operation was highlighted. It was decided to prepare a global initiative in 2005 to strengthen such financing mechanisms and to launch it at the 4th World Water Forum and Africities in 2006. |
| Mexico 2006 |
The theme was the subject of a session during the World Water Forum in March 2006
(Session FT3.03 Report)
and the global platform was successfully launched in the French Pavilion in the presence of Mr. Angel Gurría.

| Nairobi 2006 |
In September the topic was again the subject of a special session during Africities in Nairobi where the results of the study to assess the impact and perceptions of solidarity financing mechanisms by those who benefit from them was presented and debated with African local authorities. The final report of the study integrates the comments and recommendations made during this session. |
